Proof of Financial Support

The US government requires students to show financial proof to support their stay and course fee. The purpose of this document is to guarantee that students can sustain themselves without becoming a financial burden. The most common way to show this is through bank statements, but there are other acceptable forms of financial proof.

Types of Acceptable Financial Documents

When applying for F-1 or M-1 student visa, the documents you provide should clearly show that you have access to enough money for the duration of your studies. Here are some examples of acceptable documents:

Recent Bank Statements

These should be from the last six months and must include your name, the bank’s name, account balance, and the type of account.

Parents' or Sponsors’ Payslips

If your education is being funded by someone else, you can submit their payslips to show they have a stable income.

Loan Sanction Letters

If you’ve taken out a loan to fund your education, provide a letter from the lender showing the amount approved.

Scholarship Award Letters

If you’ve received a scholarship, include the official award letter that details the amount and conditions.

Minimum Funding Requirements

How much money you need to support your education and stay in the US depends on the area you will live in the US. The tuition or course fees you will pay is another deciding factor.

Usually, you should have at least $10,000 available for each year of study, though this can vary. High tuition fees or living in an expensive city could mean you need to show significantly more.

Sponsorship and Support

If you don’t have the personal funds to cover all of your expenses, you can be sponsored by a family member or other relative. You’ll need to provide documentation that shows your sponsor has sufficient funds for supporting your education. Employment letters and payslips, bank statements and other financial documents are included in this.

Visa Application Fee and Additional Requirements

Don’t forget about the visa application fee, which is $160 for the non-immigrant visa DS-160. In addition to financial documents, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay, and be prepared to present any other required documents, such as medical records or evidence of ties to your home country.
